NuX Mighty Air Review: An Affordable Wireless Amp vs YAMAHA THR10

  • Cost-Effective
  • Good For Homeuse
  • Number of Amp Modelings
  • Sound Quality
4.5/5Overall Score

While the NUX Mighty Air is a compact guitar amp, it incorporates wireless and battery in addition to amp and effects, covering all the functions necessary for home practice. Compared to the YAMAHA THR, the body is smaller, so the sound range is narrower, but there is a price difference of around hundreds dollars, and it can be said that the Mighty Air is a very cost-effective amp.

Built-in Guitar Wireless

No need for cables from the guitar to the amp. Even those who didn’t think they needed a home wireless system may find themselves addicted to the freedom from cable stress once they start using it. The latency (delay in sound) is hardly noticeable, and the sound coming from the amp is modeled, so there’s no change in sound quality. Plus, just plugging into the amp body starts charging the wireless. It runs for about 3.5 hours on a full charge. Creating an environment that lowers the hurdles before playing the guitar is one of the points for improvement, so this advantage is not small.

Bluetooth App Compatible

Nux_Mighty_Air

If you connect it to your mobile device via Bluetooth, you can also use it as an audio speaker. You can play the guitar while streaming YouTube audio. Furthermore, you can download the “MIGHTYAMP” app, which is compatible with Mighty Air, for free (compatible with both iOS and Android). With the app, you can use all the features that cannot be operated with the knobs on the body, such as amp and effects settings, rhythm, backing tracks, etc.

Built-in Rhythm Machine & Backing Tracks

It has 11 types of rhythm patterns built-in: Metronome, Pop, Metal, Blues, Swing, Rock, Ballad Rock, Funk, R&B, Latin, Dance. You can adjust the BPM in detail, or you can adjust the speed with tap tempo. In addition to the rhythm, the app also includes 25 genre-specific backing tracks with guitar and keyboard sounds.

Compatible with Guitar & Bass

Nux_Mighty_Air

It is compatible with both guitar and bass. It also has an acoustic guitar simulator built-in. The stereo specification with two 2-inch size speakers can handle both guitar and bass, and the Bluetooth music playback is also good.

Small Size

The size is 186(L) x 91(W) x 98(H) mm, and the weight is only 780g. It’s quite small as a home amp, and it doesn’t get in the way at all when placed in the room.

Rechargeable Battery, USB Power 2way

The power supply is either a USB Type-C cable or the built-in rechargeable battery. The rechargeable battery can be used for about 18 hours. This is long enough for practice use, and it seems to be usable as a BGM speaker outdoors.

Affordable and Perfect for Home Practice

Nux_Mighty_Air

With wireless, guitar/bass dual use, built-in effects, Bluetooth, rhythm, built-in rechargeable battery, and all these features, the actual selling price is too cheap at $189! The first guitar amp with built-in wireless, BOSS KATANA-AIR, is $429.99, so it’s about half the price.

Cons

  1. App is required when using bass
  2. The sound range is narrow compared to regular size amps due to the small body

App is required when using bass

Nux_Mighty_Air

Use it for bass guitar, you need to switch to bass amp modeling, which can only be done with the app connected via Bluetooth. This might be a little inconvenient for those who want to use it for both guitar and bass. But you save preset, you can switch through Channel button.

The sound range is narrow compared to regular size amps due to the small body

Nux_Mighty_Air

Because the speaker is smaller than a regular-sized amp, it’s hard to get a rich bass range, and the sound tends to be concentrated in the mid-range. This is also noticeable when playing music via Bluetooth. It’s a trade-off with the super compact size that doesn’t get in the way when placed in the room and is convenient to carry around.

Mighty Air Sound

It’s a pretty good sound. The last video should give you a sense of how the app operates.

The YAMAHA THR10II, which has upgraded and covered the additional functions added by the latecomer brand, such as wireless, Bluetooth connection, rechargeable battery, etc., in the category of desktop amp created by YAMAHA. The Mighty Air is a fully wireless desktop amp that achieves the only point that Yamaha could not achieve, “cost performance”.

Frankly speaking, the sound is better with THR10II. It behaves like a tube amp due to the range provided by the speaker size and output. There is a realism to the tone that changes with the strength of the picking.

If you have a sense of being able to spend a certain amount of money because it’s something you use for a long time, and you don’t want to compromise on sound quality, it’s YAMAHA THR10II.

If you want a sound that is reasonable (not bad, it’s a sound that can be used quite a bit), cheap, small, and has a wireless amp, then it’s NUX Mighty Air.

If you just want it cheap, You don’t need wireless – Then please go for the same company’s NUX Mighty Lite BT MK II.
